Groovy, we’re back on the road to some soul food! If you’re getting bored in the back seat, you can always play my Nintendo Switch, just don’t ask me how to to turn it on or off. I’ve had it for 3 years, and I still don’t understand all the features on it.
Anyway, today’s song is a straight funk/disco bop with flamboyant strings and punchy horns about a man who can’t figure out how to turn on his Nintendo Switch! It’s true what they say: art really does immitate life.

Game On actually dates all the way back to 2015 when it was originally titled “Top Card”, a song about a lady card shark running her game on a casino floor in Vegas. The concept was fun, but something about it never quite connected, so I went for the obvious solution: change the lyrics to tell the story of a man too dumb to know how to use his Nintendo Switch.
It’s me. I’m the man.
Sonically, the song is an homage to crossover funk/disco songs like “I Will Survive” or a lot of the early period Chic songs with horn stabs and big flamboyant strings. this one took a ton of pre-production, but was well worth it. not only do the horns sound nice and punchy, but the strings are the best we’ve ever recorded. while it has the fullness of a chamber orchestra, the string part on this song was played by just 3 people. our secret? we overdubbed them playing the same parts, but with slight variations in microphone placement to give the feel of different string players different distances from the mics, much as they would be in a more full string section.
they weren’t nearly as laborious to record, but the 8 bit blips and bloops always make me smile. we set a hard rule about not using polyphonic synths (synthesizers that can play more than 1 note at a time) in the making of this album, but thankfully, i was able to produce the 8 bit effects with a simple monophonic patch. retro!
