Be honest: when you text someone “ROTFLOL”, are you REALLY rolling on the floor laughing out loud, or are you just doing a hard exhale out your nose at something that was ever so slightly funny?
Sometimes the hyperbole of text speak can be a bit much, which is what this song is about!
I came up with this one after realizing that anybody who texts “LOL” is, at best, lightly chortling, or probably just doing a laugh-like exhale from their nose. Nobody is out here actually laughing out loud!
All this led me to examine text-speak, and how it, like so many other facets of language and syntax, tends to be pretty exaggerated. Nonetheless, I feel like it’s ultimately played for laughs.
In the full day cycle of Hype As Funk, LOLlaby definitely acts as the end of the night. It also bookends rather nicely with Gym Song, given they both feature guitar solos, and Gym Song begins with the line “wake up”, while LOLlaby ends with the music fading away, sort of the aural equivalent of falling asleep with a phone in your hand at the end of a long day.
